Big and Tiny is kicking off summer in Santa Monica with an unforgettable art summer camp experience for children ages 3 to 7. Camp will be offered daily from Monday to Friday from June 13th to September 2nd. Program will run from 9am to 3pm, with options for early drop-off or late pick-up.

A unique and creative approach to children's art

Big and Tiny is offering week-long and summer-long programs at our Santa Monica Studio. With weekly themes focused on select artistic disciplines – 2D and 3D art, drama, recycling art, and film – each camper’s experience is guaranteed to be unique. Campers will grow and express themselves through daily activities including creative movement, music, storytelling, painting, drawing, sculpting, acting and a wide variety of other art pursuits. 

Weekly Themes

WEEK 1 (6/13 to 6/17 & 7/18 to 7/22 & 8/22 to 8/26): Let’s Make Comics: Work together to create an anthology comic book!  Learn the fundamentals of storytelling & visual thinking while exploring mixed media including drawing, painting & collage.

WEEK 2 (6/20 to 6/24 & 7/25 to 7/29 & 8/29 to 9/2): Let’s Build: Young artists will work on conceptualizing & bringing to life 3D spaces. They will explore various artforms including sculpting, clay, textiles, set design, & recycled/found art. 

WEEK 3 (6/27 to 7/1 & 8/1 to 8/5): Let’s Design: Let’s get funky!  Explore wearable art, prop & costume design, mask making, face-painting and more as we build a wearable, interactive exhibition together.

WEEK 4 (7/5 to 7/8 & 8/8 to 8/12): Let’s Act: Performers unite!  Through creative explorations of improv, clowning, music, movement and more, little actors and storytellers will collaborate to conceive and stage an original play!  

WEEK 5 (7/11 to 7/15 & 8/15 to 8/19): Let’s Make a Movie: Lights, camera, action!  Your little filmmaker will gain hands-on experience in front of and behind the camera as they collaborate with new friends on an original movie!

Camp Blueprint

Each week, your Camper-Artists will work on a BIG collaborative project that they will present at the end of the week. TINY individualized activities and projects worked on throughout the week will come together on Fridays, culminating in the exhibition/presentation of the BIG group project. Campers will be split into groups every week based on age. 

9.00 – 9.30 – Intention – Arrival.  Discuss the plan of the day, goals and the BIG project. A short warm-up activity (could be anything from a mindfulness exercise to a dance party).   

9.30 – 10.30 – Tiny Activity 1 – Break into age groups for the first structured art-making session of the day.  This activity connects directly to the BIG project.  For example, the week we are making a movie, we would set up a photo scavenger hunt for the campers to work together and familiarize themselves with using a camera while getting to know one another and moving around.

10.30 – 11.30 – Tiny Eat + Play – Come together for a snack along the Hudson River and then explore the playgrounds and green space at Rockefeller Park (weather permitting).

11.30 – 12.30 – Tiny Activity 2 – Back into smaller groups for the second structured art-making session of the day.  This activity connects directly to the BIG project.  For example, the week we are putting on a theatrical performance, we would have a songwriting workshop where the campers work together to create an original song for their play.   

12.30 – 1.00 – BIG Eat – Lunch included with registration and offered by Little Spoon.

1.00 – 1.45 –  BIG Play – Recess. Outdoor exploration, games and play.

1.45 – 2.30 –  Let’s Move! Activities that connect the mind and the body, such as yoga class, human sculpture, sign language, choreography & so much more!

2.30 – 3.00 –  Reflection – Camper-Artists will reflect on their day’s work in their journals using open-ended questions and a variety of expressive tools. The following day will be briefly discussed.

Nature Exploration

Nature and outdoor exploration will play a vital role in our activities throughout every week. Taking full advantage of our gorgeous waterfront location, campers will be provided ample opportunities for unfettered natural exploration and inspiration.decisions and be actively engaged in driving their own learning.

Process Vs Product

At Big and Tiny we believe that the process – not the final product is the most valuable learning opportunity for the child. Encouraging children to engage with the making process provides great learning opportunities through exploration, expression, and discussion. Children will learn to value what they discover as they make art, not what they make.

Experience Focused

At Big and Tiny we implement inquiry and experience based approach to learning, which enables teachers to guide children through in-depth studies of real world topics engaging them in meaningful and authentic learning experiences. We believe that children learn by making their own choices and correcting their own mistakes.

Summer Camp FAQ

Our ratios for the 3 to 4 age group are 5:1. The older age groups of children ages 5 to 7 will see ratios of no more than 7:1. Ratios will adjust depending on the balance of younger and older children in a group. Generally, ratios get smaller the younger the group.

Our camper-artists will be placed into groups based on their age to ensure they are participating in age-appropriate activities with their peers. Campers will be split into groups of children ages 3-4 and 5-7, with the older group split further as needed based on enrollment numbers.

Camp and activities will be led by Big and Tiny’s very own teachers as well as guest professional artists.

Children as old as 7 will be welcome to join our art summer camp.

Campers enrolled in late pick-up will have open play and guided games with our educators.

Snacks and lunch will NOT be provided for campers so please make sure to pack your little artist a healthy meal!

Yes, campers do need to be potty trained to join the summer camp. We have a preschool prep program for younger children who are not potty trained. 

We do not offer any refunds. You can change your dates upon availability.

Yes, you can change your weeks upon availability. If we have spots available we will do our best to accommodate you.

Parents will drop off their child at the front desk outside the classroom after signing them in for the day.

Yes, you can. Please note there is very limited stroller parking space so please bring the stroller only if necessary. 

Children will not be taking any offsite field trips during this summer programming. Camper-artists will enjoy plenty of outdoor activities in the beautiful outdoor space enclosed at the rear of our studio.

Yes parents will be receiving photos of their campers on a weekly basis.

Yes, children over 5 years old need to be vaccinated against Covid-19. All children need to be up to date with their immunizations. 

Families are expected to notify Big and Tiny regarding any existing food or environmental allergies before their child’s first day of school. Parents/guardians of children with diagnosed allergies or asthma are required to provide Big and Tiny with an individualized health care plan, signed by the child’s physician, detailing the child’s symptoms, reactions, treatments, care, and all necessary medication.

This information will be shared with our staff, posted in areas where food is prepared or served, and kept in your child’s file. It is important that we are aware of all allergies, not only those related to food. If your child’s allergy is life threatening, please let us know immediately so we can make the appropriate accommodations.

All “Epi-Pens” will be stored at the front desk, and must always be clearly labeled with your child’s name, class, and expiration date.

Big and Tiny has a “peanut sensitive” environment approach. If you are bringing your own food please be aware that this policy prohibits all nuts, nut milks, nut oils, and nut butters. This applies to all food including snacks, lunch, and/or cooking classes included in the program.

Despite our diligent efforts, it is impossible to eliminate all risk for children with food allergies. Some allergies are so severe that the presence of the allergen in proximity of the child may cause a reaction. Similarly, it is impossible to prevent children from sharing food or for an allergen to be brought into the center by a family member or child, despite our best efforts to educate families and raise awareness. Ultimately, parents/guardians will need to decide whether group care is appropriate for their child with allergies in light of the risks that cannot be eliminated.

COVID-19 Procedures FAQ

New Screening Procedures Upon Arrival:

Including touchless thermometers to take everyone’s temperature upon entry. All staff are trained to perform visual health inspections. Clients will be sent home immediately at first signs of illness.

Personal Protective Equipment:

All Big and Tiny staff will wear face masks at all times. Gloves will be used to prepare meals and during snacks as well as toileting. All other non vaccinated adults entering the premises must wear a face-covering mask at all times.

Coronavirus Vaccination and Testing:

All Big and Tiny staff members are vaccinated from COVID-19 and are tested regularly. New families are required to get tested prior to enrolling unless they are vaccinated.

New Drop-In Procedure:

Staggered and designated times will be implemented to allow for safe social-distancing.

Limited Group & Class Sizes:

  • Classes will be divided by age and each child will be assigned a specific group and time slot to create consistency. Same designated staff members and educators will be assigned to each group every day.
  • Groups will be limited according to age, up to 15 kids.
  • Spaces will be thoroughly disinfected after each and every group.
  • Areas will be divided to allow social distancing during lunch/snack time and certain activities.

Cleanliness & Hygiene:

Staff, parents, and children are required to thoroughly wash hands throughout the day and disinfect upon entry. Hand sanitizing stations are conveniently provided. All toys, materials, and surfaces are disinfected after every use. A deep clean of the premises is performed every evening and additional cleaning throughout the day.

COVID-19 waiver:

All families are required to sign a COVID-19 waiver before the first day of school.
