At Big and Tiny our mission is to provide a safe space for kids to cultivate their creativity, explore with autonomy and build relationships. We empower children to think, question, investigate, explore and help navigate the journey of learning.
Our approach is based on the following principles:
Multi-age groups. Students of multi-ages are in a classroom where they naturally learn with and from each other. The atmosphere in the classroom is one of collaboration and cooperation. The older children freely share their knowledge, which not only benefits the younger children, but also deepens the older child’s knowledge and enhances their leadership and confidence.
Experiential Learning. Children learn through their senses, they satisfy their natural curiosity by touching and exploring objects. Our activities are developmentally appropriate, hands on, open ended, interactive and sensory.
Role of the Environment and Space. We believe children deserve beautiful calming and natural environments that have positive effects on their development. We’ve created a thoughtfully designed space that allows children to explore and boost their imagination. Natural materials such as wood are present through the entire space to create a pleasant atmosphere for parents, children and educators. Toys and playthings are often minimalist and simple in order to stimulate the child’s imagination.
Creativity. At Big and Tiny we emphasize process rather than final product. By exposing children to creative experiences we set the foundations for a lifetime of creative expression.
Autonomy. Learning how to be independent at a young age is a critical skill, as it teaches children how to conduct themselves later in life as they take on greater responsibilities. As children become more independent, they explore the world on their own and discover how to express themselves. They also begin to understand how their choices and actions influence outcomes. At Big and Tiny, we focus on helping children develop a sense of self and build up their self-esteem.
Socialization & emotional development. At Big and Tiny we stand by the principles of collaborating, sharing and respecting each other. Through our educational programs, children have the opportunity to play and interact with other children, which will help them learn how to connect with others. Our team will help children recognize and manage their own feelings and the feelings of others. Self-control and resolving conflicts are key objectives for emotional development.
Communication and language skills. Encourage children to use their verbal skills through fun and playful activities including songs, repetition and stories.
Physical development. Challenging children through games and activities to develop control over the body, particularly muscles and physical coordination.
Critical thinking. Help children develop their cognitive skills by offering choices, letting them make decisions and solve problems. As young children explore, ask questions and create, they improve their thinking skills.
